About Christians in Communication

Working with individuals and organisations across York and North Yorkshire, Christians in Communication (CIC) encourages and supports them to communicate with each other and the public. This communication may be via traditional media (such as print and radio) or electronic social media. The charity encourages the development of promotional material, online information, and networking between churches.

Main activities of CIC
At present the main activity of Christians in Communication is the production of The Friday Mailing, a weekly email informing a ciculation of about 2,500 people about Church-related events and news across the city of York and surrounding region.

History of CIC
Christians in Communication, York and North Yorkshire is the working title of The North Yorkshire and District Christian Broadcasting Council (Charity No 512656).

CIC was founded around 1980 in preparation for the opening of BBC Radio York and worked as an advisory body to the station management in the way that such bodies had been set up for earlier Local Radio Stations. Coverage of religious issues were particularly important in the early months of BBC Radio York, since the station gave extensive coverage of the York stage of Pope John Paul II's visit to Britain in May 1982.

In its early years CIC ran training sessions to help Christians produce broadcast quality voice pieces and supported Radio York both morally and financially, including having a CIC-supported religious producer. This financial commitment was eventually taken over by the Anglican Diocese of York.

CIC has, in the past, financially supported the national inter-church group’s Christmas radio adverts, encouraging listeners to recall the Christian roots of the festival. These were used in Independent Local Radios including Minster FM and Stray FM.

With less coverage being given to religious affairs on local radio, CIC focussed on other areas of activity, with some of its members being involved in projects such as the York Courses, easy-to-use ecumenical audio/video courses bringing famous voices and challenging opinions into church discussion groups.

In 2014 CIC inherited the personnel (trustees and administrative worker) and intellectual copyright of CoRE (the working name of the York City Centre Churches Care and Development Trust). CoRE was a totally independent ecumenical body working on behalf of the churches and associated Christian bodies within the walls of York City Centre, helping to promote collaborative working. Between 2005 and 2014, CoRE developed a number of projects in York, including: an app for visiting York Churches; brochures and leaflets promoting Church tourism in the city and county; a common signage project for city centre churches; a Lenten talks series; and 'Taste and See' days offering workshops on different types of Christian spirituality.

At present CIC is not a large charity, and relies on donations from individual and corporate supporters (including Churches Together in York), and sponsors of The Friday Mailing.
